In Memory of Tommy & Lou Pat Turner

Grief. It's a term our family has come to know far to often this past year, but through grief comes an immense amount of self-reflection and learning to live the life those you lost would want you to live. In my journey through grief, I have found that running is a safe haven and a place of peace. I challenged myself to run and complete a full marathon (Cowtown, February 25, 2018) in memory of Uncle Tommy and Aunt Lou and raise money for their most cherished non-profit, CASA of the South Plains.
Tommy (Uncle Tommy / Big Daddy) and Lou Pat (Aunt Lou / Mimi) Turner were taken from all of us far too soon. As I sit here writing, I can hear the ripple effect of laughter from Tommy's jokes and Lou's stories that made you feel like you were living them with her. They were two people who loved and loved BIG! Their family was their pride and joy, and if you weren't an immediate family member, you became one when you entered their house. Their warmth and generosity extended outside of the family and into the community and their careers, always finding ways to serve and help those less fortunate. They were true examples of a servants heart.
For those of you that knew Tommy and Lou Pat personally know that they were advocates for the underdog, especially children. They were active, participating members of CASA of the South Plains for many years.
CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates and their agency’s main focus is to be the voice of the children. CASA of the South Plains empowers community members to serve as Volunteer Advocates who speak for the well-being of abused and neglected children in the foster care system. CASA of the South Plains currently supports 197 community members who serve as Volunteer Advocates with the agency. They work with 375 foster children. Locally, it costs approximately $1,500 to recruit and train one Volunteer Advocate. Unfortunately, CASA of the South Plains faces ongoing challenges as the South Plains region is consistently ranked as a region with one of the highest rates of child abuse and neglect per capita in the state of Texas. More children in our community are victims of these heinous acts than most places in the state. Currently, CASA needs 400 additional Volunteer Advocates in order to serve all children in foster care in our region. However, the number of children in foster care in the South Plains region is consistently on the increase. This poses a unique challenge and creates a very high demand for CASA of the South Plains to recruit an ever increasing number of Volunteer Advocates in order to provide advocacy services to all children in foster care in our area.
My goal is to raise $1,500 for CASA of the South Plains, giving them the means to recruit and train a new volunteer.
As I prepare for my upcoming race, I ask you to join me in honoring Uncle Tommy and Aunt Lou's memory by donating to help us reach this goal togther.
