In Memory of Les Brown

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of our friend Les Brown. A native of Oklahoma, Les came to California in the 1980s to be part of a more accepting community, eventually growing roots in Santa Monica. He earned his Masters in English from the University of Chicago, traveled the world, spoke several languages, hiked, biked, climbed, swam, and loved music and art. He was constantly learning and curious about people and cultures all around the world. And for anyone that tried his cooking, it was both adventurous and delicious!
Les was also an avid hiker, at home on the trails. He could name most birds by sight or through their calls and was familiar with the native plants. Hiking with him was like hiking with a nature guide, with long discussions on philosophy, history, and the finer points on the non-funniness of comedy thrown into the mix. He would reminisce of his fearless youth as a dirtbag rock climber in Yosemite. Barreling down mountain trails or roads on a bike. And backpacking on harrowing mountain passes.
In memory of Les, we are collecting donations to assist his family with any costs and the remaining funds will be donated to the Santa Monica Mountains Fund to honor his love of the outdoors. And every time we walk the trails, hear the birds and see the wildflowers we can remember our amazing friend.

We will miss you, Les. And although you are physically gone from our lives, we will never forget your friendship, your wicked sense of humor, kindness, and smile.
