Join us in changing the outcome of Small Intestinal Cancer
Jen Morley was a daughter, a sister, an aunt and a friend. At age 41, she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer—small bowel adenocarcinoma (or SBA, small intestine). Because of it’s location, this cancer is almost never caught before it is stage IV and metastasized to other locations in the body. This was the case with Jen.
SBA is a rare cancer. This year 10,090 people will be diagnosed with small intestine cancer, or .6% of all new cancer diagnoses. Of those 3,140 will have SBA. The 5-year survival rate for metastasized small intestine cancer is only 27%. Because it does not affect many, there is very little funding for research. So, they treat it like colon cancer, even though it is NOT colon cancer.
Jen was an amazing person! She overcame childhood illness and a near fatal car accident as a college student. She never had any bitterness toward either situation that she was dealt. She loved the ocean, foreign travel and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Her nephew and niece were the sun and the stars to her. Her career at Google gave her immense pride and purpose. Jen was a joker, a prankster and her laugh was infectious! She made everyone around her feel happy—she could literally light up a room with her smile.
Jen took her cancer diagnosis in stride and did everything she could to fight it! Most importantly, she developed an even more positive attitude and a sense of gratitude. She became more appreciative of each day, of every interaction, and of every single person in her life. She LOVED life and had no intention of leaving so soon, but sadly, after 26 months, SBA took her away from all of us.
As a patient, and an affected family, being told that there is no hope and no treatment because it is a rare form of the disease is very frustrating Rates of SBA are on the rise. This is why we are raising funds in Jen's Memory for research specific to this cancer.
