In Memory of Haozhong Xu

My grandpa was diagnosed with late stage Cholangiocarcinoma cancer in September 2019 and passed away peacefully on June 23rd, 2020. Because of grandpa’s age and the stage of the cancer, he did not have many options when it came to treatment except chemotherapy. His team at Duke Cancer Institute did their best to provide the best treatment and support they could along with very helpful information for our family. He started chemo treatment in October. At first, he was able recover between the treatments and got back to his usual strength. And then as the medicines got stronger, it got harder and harder to recover between the treatments. He often felt the fatigue from the cancer and the chemo. In May, we decided to stop his treatments as his body could not handle them anymore even though his cancer agent numbers were decreasing.

Grandpa had such a positive attitude towards life and even comforted his family after he received his diagnosis. He said "I've lived a fulfilling life and I have no regrets. I've seen so many things change before my eyes and I think I'd be ok if my time has come". He bravely faced the challenges that approached him and tackled them one at a time. He still enjoyed his life to the best of his abilities, gardening when he had the energy, sitting outside to look at the birds and the sky, making yummy foods. He was just a kind, loving man. We as his family are forever thankful to have had him in our lives. Grandpa, we will always love you and we will never forget you.

Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) is a very aggressive but very rare cancer. There are fewer than 20,000 cases per year in the US, but as of recently, more and more people are getting this cancer. The symptoms are also hard to distinguish to begin with as you won’t really feel like anything is wrong until it’s too late. Because of how rare it is, it is hard to study. The new and promising treatments are usually only available in clinical trials, and the clinical trials are usually targeted towards specific mutations of the cancer. Grandpa was not able to take part in any of these clinical trials because he did not have the right mutations, the same is true with 90% of patients with this cancer. The hope is that more research is taking place and that each year, we can find out more about what causes it, how to prevent it, and how to better treat it.

This gofundme page is dedicated to my grandpa, Haozhong Xu. The donations we receive here will go to two group that are important to helping people treat and tackle Cholangiocarcinoma and other cancers. The funds will be divided in half and I will donate them to each organization in memory of Haozhong Xu.

The first group is the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation

The second group is the Duke Cancer Institute

These groups are dedicated to finding a cure and improving the quality of life for those affected by Cholangiocarcinoma and all other cancers.

Thank you everyone for your love and support.
