In Memory of Brigid Keogh (1956-2018) and in aid of The Alzheimer Society Longford and St Joseph's Care Centre Longford.
On the 26th of January this year my mother, Brigid Keogh, lost her battle with the cruel, devastating and heartbreaking condition that is Alzheimer's disease.
Brigid was a beautiful, intelligent, hardworking, creative, kind and caring lady, who always went out of her way to help others. She was extremely mild mannered and always had a kind word for everyone. Brigid's family were her pride and joy, she loved nothing more than to have her family and friends around her and was renowned for her cooking and baking. She was always described as a true lady.
When Brigid received the untimely diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer's disease in her early 50's, it was devastating beyond belief, there were just no words, neither Brigid nor us as her family fully appreciated what lay ahead. Brigid accepted the diagnosis with courage and determination to get on with life, she never once complained or looked for sympathy, she held her head high and faced each challenge with grace and humility. With Brigid's strength and strong will, together with the love and support of her family we managed to care for her at home for as long as possible. This would not have been feasible without the excellent carers from the Alzheimer Society in Longford and also two very special ladies Mary and Kate, without their care, support and compassion, we really could not have managed.
When we could no longer look after Brigid at home, we felt St Joseph's Care Centre in Longford was the most suitable place to provide the care she required. From day one the care and support Brigid and us as her family received was phenomenal. The staff provided a home away from home with exceptional standards of care and professionalism. Each member of staff were extraordinarily dedicated to providing the highest standards of care, compassion and patience at all times, while always being respectful of Brigid's privacy and dignity, all of which supported Brigid and us as a family through some of the darkest of days. We learned to appreciate the good days, but even on the bad days Brigid remained pleasant and gentle and always had a smile or a hug for those around her.
Even though we had twelve long years to come to terms with this unrelenting condition which robbed us of a beautiful wife, mother, granny, sister and friend; we can't help but feel cheated from a life that could have been. While we know Brigid is now at peace and her struggles have come to an end, it is never easy to say goodbye.
Now with heavy hearts, we will strive to keep her memory and legacy alive and savour the memories of the good times. In honour of Brigid, The Alzheimer Society Longford and St Joseph's Care Center Longford, we aim to raise funds to show our appreciation and in turn help other individuals and their families in their time of need.
A group of very special ladies (Jean O'Reilly, Linda Tierney, Rhonda Carey, Emma Carey, Ellen Keegan, Ciara Fee, Aoife Banks, Marie Farrell, Niamh Banks & Fiona Kenny )and I are going to partake in the Ladies Mini Marathon in Dublin on the 3rd of June. This date also marks Brigid and Charlie's 40th wedding anniversary.
