In Memorium - Julio Tun

We celebrate the life of Julio Tun, a man that was very dear to us and whose smile we will miss for a long time to come.   Julio's sudden passing on December 29, 2020 has been devastating for his family, friends, and co-workers.  Many of you have asked how you can help support his family.  If you so choose, you may provide funds to assist Julio's family with expenses as they move forward from their tragic loss.

Julio is survived by his lovely wife Juana,  two sons, (Julio) David and Jorge, and an extended family in Julio’s hometown of San Martin, Guatemala.   Julio's supervisor shared a story of Julio's life that truly demonstrates his immense kindness.  As a testament to his generous heart, Julio traveled often to Guatemala over the holidays where he spent time visiting with family and delivering donations of clothing, food, candy, household items, and holiday gifts to orphanages and shelters for blind and homeless people.  While this does not surprise us, it's one more reason for us to adore the man we knew.

It is always difficult when we lose a friend and colleague and this loss has been particularly hard to swallow.  Julio worked for Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc., a subcontractor to the National Cancer Institute.  Julio's role included support for a large research facility containing NCI laboratories under the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics.  The groups he so kindly supported include the Cancer Genomics Research Laboratory, Laboratory of Translational Genomics, and Laboratory of Genetic Susceptibility.   He held this position ably for 10 years and was a part of our collective work family.

Julio's job responsibilities included management of all incoming and outgoing shipments for the laboratories.  And this, with so many busy labs in the building, was no small feat!!   He delivered mail and packages to the over 100 staff members in the facility and coordinated building logistics.  There were a hundred other little things he took care of behind the scenes to help make our lives easier.  He approached his duties with a humble diligence and was one of the gentlest people we have ever known.   Julio was disciplined in all actions and got things done at a rate that was enviable from someone with 70 years under their belt.  He interacted daily with other building support staff, security, and a multitude of service providers that arrived at his loading dock with a warm smile and steady hand.  Our laboratories ran smoothly because of Julio's efforts and we extend our immense gratitude for all he contributed to our lives and research.

We have heard from so many about Julio's constant cheerfulness and willingness to do whatever he could to help. Julio was a vital member of our team.  He was upbeat by nature and always carried a smile and a greeting for anyone that crossed his path.  We will miss him dearly and will never be able to replace him.  We send our very deepest sympathies to everyone that loved Julio.  We certainly did and we can promise that no one will ever wear suspenders with as much style as Julio.

If you would like to send a personal card or note, they can be sent directly to the family:
