On 23 December, 2020 a USMC and Iraq Veteran, GySgt Dave Scharf (Ret) suddenly took his own life leaving a terrible void and unanswered questions too many whose lives he deeply touched.
He is survived by his beautiful, loving and faithful wife Mary of 25 years, two amazing children, Drew, and Angie who adored him.
I was stationed with Dave while we were at MCAS Beaufort South Carolina '96-'99. I was a Sgt and he was a Lance Corporal. He was always someone I could count on and really depended upon.
We were again stationed together at MCAS Yuma Arizona'06-'08, I was a GySgt and he was a SSgt getting ready to be a Gunny himself! He was my neighbor and we became good friends then. He was a great Marine and even a better friend. He mentored many junior Marines who today are GySgts too!
No one knows why a veteran is compelled to take their own life but it happens each and every day, 22 to roughly guess and that is 22 too many.
Because of this sudden loss, Mary, herself a Marine Veteran, is faced with many overwhelming choices, decisions and unexpected financial burden. I'm asking my Marine Family, Veteran Community and his family and friends to come together.
With Christmas just a few hours away, I'm hoping you can find it in your hearts to donate to Dave's funeral expenses. I know some of you may be struggling financially too but anything will help. If you can't donate, please share this and help Mary out.
