In Deborah's Memory

Hello, my name is Jimmi Sue Scoggins Selman and I would like to tell you about my sister. Her name is/was Deborah Scoggins Barnwell. She was born in Greenwood, SC and spent her youth growing up in Mathews Mill Village among some of the best friends a young woman could ever hope for. Once she finished school, she moved to Henderson County, NC and lived there through her entire adulthood. She loved living in the Blue Ridge Mountains and she loved her life there.
Several years ago, Deb was diagnosed with colon cancer. She received both chemo therapy and radiation treatments. She was pronounced cured, but her little body was so abused from the treatments, she never completely gained her strength back. When we asked if she regretted receiving the treatments, she said she would do it again, because it gave her more time with her family. She was thankful that her son and daughter were there to take care of her through it all.
The last time I saw my sister, about 9 months ago, I was concerned. She had become frailer and she had started showing signs of being forgetful. The last time I spoke with her was September 14th, she was concerned about her health and assured me she had an appointment with her doctor at the end of the month.
On September 16th, at 8:00 am, I received a call from my nephew, he was crying so hard I could hardly understand him. He told me that his mother had passed away in the night and he had found her that morning.
As we were growing up and all through adulthood, we often spoke of how we would like to go. We had watched many family members lose battles with cancer and it was not something we thought we could go through. We always said we wanted to go fast. I am thankful for her, that she went quickly and peacefully. I will miss her for the rest of my life, she was my best friend, but I am so thankful she got her wish.
It has been one week since Deb left us and we are still in shock and disbelief that she has left us, but we will continue to remember the good times, the fun times, her dry since of humor, her love for creatures great and small and her compassion for the underdogs of the world.
Today, I am reaching out to you on behalf of my niece, Lindsey Barnwell and my nephew Mitchell Barnwell. My sister did not have a Will and there were no funds set aside to handle arrangements and legal costs that are going to be required to settle her estate. They are both unemployed at this time and could use your help in covering these costs. Any amount will help and we will be very grateful for anything you can do. It is difficult for us to ask for help, but sometimes you have to set pride aside and give thanks for other people’s generosity.
Thank You from the Family
