LIVIN: I'm Running the GC Marathon!

I never used to be a huge believer in the idea that everything happens for a reason…. In fact, I was a massive sceptic.

For me that all changed earlier this year when a single moment and a decision I took altered the course of someone close to me’s life.

It was the choice I made to not sit idly and wait for something to happen.

I chose to get off my arse and go for a run that somehow allowed me to be in the right place at the right time.

Once I moved past my own initial waves of emotional highs and lows, I started to think was all this meant to happen?

But more importantly what could I do to potentially help someone else and alter the course of their life….

Mental illness is an issue that doesn’t discriminate – It can strike anyone at any time.

From my own personal experience it can be a feeling of anxiety, nerves or even just a overiding sense that you aren't firing on all cylinders.

As a guy you just brush if off as a phase or a mood that will pass. For me being able to be active and speak to my mates or family and have a laugh would allow me to push past whatever challenge got thrown up.

I know it's not that easy for everyone...

With all that in mind I thought it was my turn to shine some light on this ever-growing issue.

The fact that one in seven young people experience a mental illness in any year is a frightening statistic and so I have decided to join forces with LIVIN to help spread their message that: #itaintweaktospeak.

LIVIN is helping to change the stigma that surrounds mental illness through educational programs and a number of awareness initiatives all designed to help break the cycle of suffering in silence.

I will be running the Gold Coast Marathon on July 1, 2018 and will be using the time between now and then to raise as much money as possible to help LIVIN’s cause but also and I think more importantly spread the word that it ain’t weak to speak.

The thought of running 42kms seems like it will be bloody tough for the uneducated casual runner that I am.

But when it’s put into context by thinking about what it must be like for someone to suffer in silence for months and even years of their life, I figured it’s the least I can do.

For the months leading up to the Marathon I will be posting an online blog covering all things from challenges throughout training to some of the stories from the people I have met or hope to meet in the future.

I hope that someone will see this post and take this as an opportunity to start a conversation with someone close to them or even a stranger that they may have avoided in the past.

If that’s the case then I have done my bit.

Please give generously for a cause that effects more people than we realise and don’t forget to share this with your friends!
