I.M.P. Studios (Independent Media Promotion)

INDEPENDENT MEDIA PROMOTION ( I.M.P. Studios) is a sole proprietorship owned by myself. I'm Steve Campbell and I began Independent Media Promotion in 1996. The first order of business at the time was to create a Talent Agency. This all came to inception in a small college town called Lawrence KS.  Where I was fresh out of the parents home and joining bands. I desperately needed a way to sell an act to a venue.  My first job out of highschool was a teaching position at a place called  Treble Cleff Music.  A local music retailer catering largely to the symphonic and Highschool bands and focusing their attention to a lesson program.
In 1999 I split. Left the midwest and flew to Australia where I came to know my country. The Music industry was way ahead of Kansas and Sydney was big and full of talent, motivated talent. It was here I was introduced and intrigued by the business of rehearsals. A necessary and effective method of preparation in an environment that catered right to me. Walls of mirrors, P.A. drums, privacy ,Three years in Sydney gave me all the knowledge I needed to eventually turn my Agency into Outreach. Thirteen years went by and I had no idea I would be in a position to expand. In 2001 I relocated to Maui HI where finding a place to rehearse my bands was next to impossible. Three years later I'm bound to Houston for my wife's cancer treatment and hard times as the sole provider as she deteriorated. The Talent Agency now taking precedence over my wife's 4 star catering company  Glorious Food Catering Hawaii that was dissolved only months earlier in Maui. 
Houston was very good to us. And after Kathy's passing I relocated to the Big Island of Hawaii to homestead and work the hotels. Illusions of grandeur. The Hawaii scene was so tied up it just didn't seem to have room.  But after a while a student or two here and a backline rental or a staging gig would trickle in.  
It was in 2013 during a grueling wild park in North Hollywood that I was again green lighted for Houston. So I came to Houston to help a friend run a rehearsal studio. A venue I would later come to own. In 2014 I took lease at 1018 Sawdust Rd.  In Spring/Woodlands and I simply picked up where previous owners left off.  For the first time ever, in my 14th year of trying Independent Media Promotion had a physical location and venue that wasn't a home address. 

We currently offer music lessons , host rehearsals and book entertainment. The business dabbles in tech services and show services offering Audio Visual support staff to other companies both in Houston and on the Big Island.  I'm a stagehand of 16 years  experience and an Audio Visial tech of 7yrs. As a sole proprietorship I employ myself in a wide range of tasks. These services support the creative space in The Woodlands while our home in Hawaii has become the booking office space we needed.  Myself and Fiance Judy Link  run the agency as a hobby. I say hobby because I cant call it a profession. The profession is drumming , music and teaching, the hobby is entertainment booking. How ironic it is to have started a business over twenty years ago with the intentions of booking bands and to have it develope into this self serving catered venue for my art whilst inadvertently making a genuine focus and resource for the arts community in the area.  Many times my self important title of Strategic Director has put a room into a roar of laughter but in hindsight the title has seemed to be exactly the role I do best. I decide. That's what I do best. I decided to take a chance on Houston. And I'm very glad I did. The Studio is our everything and it's everyone else's something. Which is better than nothing. For some of our clients it's the only source of refuge from a world that just doesnt want to hear it. This  studio is all done. It's stamped finished, conquered, in motion, "turn key".
What it is lacking is a duplicate and what I'm raising money for is a second location. The proposed $50k goal is not to support the current location but rather to open a second. We think that with just one more location and venue of approximately the same size, open to the public, will allow us to accomplish all that the business is lacking.  A budget for labor, renovations and rent, equipment for the new studio and staff to run it for a period of two years. We know this can be accomplished because we opened and successfully got a  running  start on my income as a percussion instructor and kitchen help at a Thai restaurant. Not exactly a six figure income. And at the time we had only one band  occupying  and it barely covered 34% of our overhead. We can do more with $80.00 than most folks can do with $800.00 and it's because we live like we have had to on the Islands. We live like we're broke. So we dont anticipate our  living expenses going up just because theres more money to spend. We want to put our donated funds into the new venue  so that we can focus on a third location as soon as the second location permits the investment. Now we are not willing to disclose where we want our new studio or where we are thinking of leasing because we dont want that to be a factor in your decision to donate. We also want to.make no promises to that effect because this decision is crucial  andsince it's my job and I havent decided , budget will lay largely a factor in that decision. If you donate it's because you see the good in afterschool music programs for kids, the supporting of local musicians and educators through a teaching program. You want to donate only because you value the service of artist representation and management. You can recognize the importance of agency backing for performers and you can appreciate the sound of good music.

We have come to the crossroads with this business wherein the need to hire is eminent yet the funds don't exist. We have reached a pinnacle of development wherein the current venue is at moderate capacity and vacancy is rare. We have more people asking for service and work than we can schedule or staff. Not bad problems to have ...unless you enjoy sleep. It is time for our second location to emerge. We hope that with your help we can accomplish that quickly and successfully to bring refuge and resource to artists of a different community. Might be Lawrence, might be Maui, might be Sydney. What we know is that one more I.M.P. studio will allow us the leverage to open several. And ultimately that's what we are raising money for. We are raising money for the funds needed to invest two years into a second location dedicated to the same demographic in a totally different city. Just as we did here in The Woodlands TX, to create a venue in a community in dire need of the outlet. We believe that a second location will also benefit our agencies booking services as each location brings the talent we seek to employ - straight to our doorstep. We see the delight in the eyes of kids when they accomplish and discover something on their instruments and we see the relief in the working musicians face when they realize they have a private creative space to work from and/or the support of agents dedicated to procuring employment. What we intend to do is grow this business through community support, the support of our patrons, students and clients and the hard work of our skills and labor. This is just our donation box. This campaign covers  every facet of our direction and commitment to music and the business that taints it. We can educate and host and let the community build their scene. We negotiate and offer dispute resolution. We offer representation and protection and we want to guarantee protection with the financesto hire professional litigators  for  our clients should it come to that. We dont need your money or donations to get started. We need support and your donations so that we can finish.
