Immigration Help Needed
Dear friends, family and concerned citizens, it is a bit scary for me to put this out there but I am writing this on behalf of my daughter who is going through a very difficult time. Her husband is currently in ICE custody and they are trying to deport him. A little history: He was brought here at 4 years old and abandoned by his parents. He was placed in foster care. He ultimately got a green card to work but, unfortunately, no one advised him to sign up for DACA when it became available to him. The rules under DACA provide much more protection than those for a green card. Essentially, a green card offers very little protection. At 19 he got into an argument with another man. No violence - only verbal but he was accused of making terroristic threats. His attorney at the time advised him to just plead guilty because it was a misdemeanor charge and not a big deal. He did just that. (Complete honesty here...he also got into a fight with his then girlfriend and broke her phone in the heat of the moment.) He had a great deal of remorse and did everything the court told him to do and has not been in any trouble since. In the meantime, he and my daughter got together. My daughter's children's father had passed away and Romaine has been an incredible support to her family since then. These children love him and can't afford to lose another father figure but it looks like they might. Just as Romaine completed the last of his probation, the political climate in our country changed. These minor infractions committed in his youth are coming back to bite him. ICE says they are enough to revoke his green card and deport him. Had he had proper representation on the original charge, he would have fought and most likely won the case. He now needs to see if it is possible to expunge that record but he needs a very good lawyer to get it done. In all honesty, I am terrified that they are going to send him back to a country where he hasn't lived since he was 4 years old and doesn't even speak the language! I won't deny that he did something wrong and deserved the consequence (which he accepted at the time) but THIS consequence is beyond cruel for a misdemeanor charge. We have already spent more than $10,000 on an attorney but this is an expensive process. The favor that I ask of everyone: Please pray this works! Now, if you can't donate, please share the story.
