Who I am:

Dario Guazzo is a 28 year old Architect and Urban Researcher working at the Center on Global Justice at UC San Diego. In June 2018, he started work as a collaborator for Estudio Teddy Cruz + Fonna Forman. As anyone who knows him can attest, Dario cares deeply about this organization and has worked tirelessly on the different challenges he faces in the studio.

The UCSD Cross-Border Initiative was established in 2012 and is housed in the Center for Global Justice - an Organized Research Unit at the UC San Diego devoted to community-engaged interdisciplinary research and intervention in the San Diego-Tijuana border region. These border cities comprise the largest bi-national metropolitan region in the world, severed by the most trafficked international border in the world. While these border cities have roughly equal populations, San Diego has sprawled approximately six times larger than Tijuana in the last decades. This uneven urbanization-- dramatized by the relative proximity between wealthy exurbs and impoverished settlements-- sit minutes apart from one another. In this way, the issue is emblematic of the urgent challenges faced by many regions across the US and in the world.

The goal:

The aim of this campaign is to depict the reality at the border through a neutral lens from above. The buffer zone immediately surrounding the border wall is a deeply conflicted territory that now more than ever has to cope with the uncertainty of the influx of migrant communities in settlements spread across Tijuana.

After months of dispute, asylum seekers still live in improvised encampments between the city’s canyons and are trapped between the total incapability of both the US and Mexico to cooperate and resolve this Humanitarian Emergency. Some migrants are waiting to enter the US through legal processes but most have to overcome challenges like water scarcity and illness. This leads pregnant women to live on the streets and single mothers to risk everything and try crossing the border illegally. On the other side, the void of support for migrant families from US institutions is perceivable.

The Cross-Border Initiative has already captured plenty of images for their research from ground cameras. It is the goal of this campaign to gain a new territorial perspective for on-site investigations in Tijuana through drone footage. Our thought is to capture the images that inspire people to action.

Currently, Estudio Teddy Cruz + Fonna Forman is involved in proposing Emergency Housing in Tijuana. This is a moment in history that the studio team wants to capture and preserve, especially in regards and with respect to the migrant families who are undoubtedly going through the toughest experience of their lives.

The values:

As a research scholar, the promoter of the campaign is not able to pay for a drone on his own. The aim of this GoFundMe campaign is to provide funding for the much-needed equipment. The financial feasibility to reach the goal is set at $999.

This is the link of the drone:

Pledge:

Any remaining funds raised during this campaign will go towards any extra expenditure during the on-site job. The equipment purchased will be refurbished, in order to spend as little as possible. Moreover, the team will update the studio web-page monthly in order to contribute to the overall research being produced by Center on Global Justice.

If the required amount is reached, at the end of the research, the promoter of the campaign will pass on the drone to the Cross-Border Initiative (http://blum.ucsd.edu/) - which is always much in need of pivotal instruments like a drone, in order to get territorial representation from above, especially in Tijuana where first-hand data are always the most reliable - in order to let future researchers and students, have the same tools to advance their own work.

Thank you so much for your support and generous help.
