IMARA Expansion: Our second group of women.

What is IMARA? IMARA, which means strong/tenacious in Swahili, is a social enterprise created in 2019 with the goal to support vulnerable women and their families in Mafinga, rural Tanzania. We do this by creating an agricultural cooperative which employs them and gives them access to a safe and stable source of income, bringing financial stability to their families. We find the land and invest in it so it’s ready to cultivate, create the legal structure for the women to associate in a cooperative, set up their bank account, train the women to work the land and coordinate them through the harvests. From their side, the women plant and work the land, harvest it, and then sell the crops. They then divide the profit amongst themselves, earning a significant income to support their families. A part of the income is saved to finance the next crop: our goal is that the groups gain financial independence and eventually continue to work autonomously. We have now successfully established our first group, what we call IMARA 1, which after only two harvests is financially self-sustainable.

 

What the money is for: After the positive learnings and outcome of IMARA 1, we are looking to expand to IMARA 2 to reach and support more women. Setting up this second group means investing in another acre of land, to be cultivated by twelve new members. We have already located the land as well found twelve wonderful new members that need our help and are eager to work for a better life for themselves, but most importantly for their children and dependents. Preparing and launching the IMARA 2 land and group requires an initial investment of €5,120. This amount will set the operation going, cover the initial capital expenses as well as the operating expenses for two harvests, by which time we expect to be self-sufficient. Our focus crop will be tomatoes which have a strong yield, stable demand and which we have successfully grown with the IMARA 1 group.

 

If you decide to support the project: You will be part of the investor group of IMARA 2. We will keep you up to date through quarterly reports about the group’s progress, from the very start through successive harvests. We would like to make the experience as personal as possible by including pictures and update on how we are progressing, together with the challenges and joys which will come our way. Of course, we would also like to share your names and pictures with the group, so they get to know you and value the effort that their investors are making to help them even if they are far away.

Digging and installing irrigation well and system including pumps

4.Fungicides & Insecticides €337 (913,000 TZS)

Nyotaz, Superwill, Tan Copper, Dudumectin, Sinocron, Booster, Kabendazim, Aquwet and others.

 

5. Seeds & Crates €174 (471,250 TZS)

 

6. Opex Expenses for second harvest €450 (1,217,700 TZS)

¿Qué es IMARA? Un resumen sobre nuestro proyecto: IMARA significa fuerte/tenaz en suajili. Somos un proyecto social basado en Mafinga, una zona rural en el corazón de Tanzania y nuestro objetivo es ayudar a mujeres vulnerables y a sus familias . Les ayudamos creando una cooperativa agraria que les da empleo y acceso a una fuente de ingresos segura y estable. En IMARA encontramos el terreno, invertimos en él y lo preparamos para el cultivo. Tambien creamos la estructura legal para que las mujeres se asocien en una cooperativa, les abrimos una cuenta bancaria, les damos formación y tambien las coordinamos durante cultivo y cosecha.

Por su parte, las mujeres siembran y trabajan la tierra, cosechan y más tarde venden el cultivo, repartiéndose entre ellas los beneficios. Esta es una fuente de ingresos fundamental para ellas y sus familias. Una parte de los ingresos se ponen a un lado para financiar la siguiente cosecha, ya que nuestro objetivo es que tras sucesivas cosechas los grupos ganen independencia y sean financieramente autosostenibles.

Ya tenemos establecido nuestro primer grupo de agricultoras, lo que llamamos IMARA 1, que después de tan solo 2 cosechas ya ha conseguido ser autosostenible.

 

¿Para qué son los fondos que estamos recaudando? Despues de haber establecido con éxito IMARA 1, queremos expandir a IMARA 2 y así poder ayudar a más personas. Para crear este segundo grupo necesitamos invertir en otro acre de tierra, que será cultivado por 12 miembros nuevos. Ya tenemos localizado el terreno, asi como 12 mujeres que necesitan nuestra ayuda y estan dispuestas a trabajar para mejorar la vida sus familias y sobre todo de sus niños. Preparar el terreno y lanzar el grupo IMARA 2 requiere una inversión inicial de 5,120 €. El cultivo principal será el tomate, que tiene márgenes fuertes y salida facil en el mercado, y el cual ya hemos cultivado con el primer grupo.

 

Si os decidís a apoyar el proyecto: Formareis parte del grupo de inversores de IMARA 2. Os mantendremos informados a través de informes mensuales sobre la progreso del grupo y el desarrollo del proyecto, desde el inicio hasta las sucesivas cosechas. Nos gustaria hacer la experiencia lo más personal posible compartiendo fotos y perspectivas de cómo vamos avanzando, juntos con los retos y alegrías que haya por el camino. Por supuesto nos gustaria también compartir vuestros nombres y fotos con el grupo para que os conozcan y valoren el esfuerzo de sus inversores, que quieren ayudarles a prosperar aunque esten lejos.
