Hi, my name is Leo Melendez and I'm a community organizer in Fajardo, Puerto Rico.
I’m raising $5,000 to fund the Love Brigade's rebuilding efforts on the island after the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria.
What is Love Brigade?
The Love Brigade (or “Brigada de Amor” in Spanish) identifies and resolves FEMA and other disaster assistance cases pending for the at-risk citizens of my hometown of Fajardo, Puerto Rico
Part of our mission is also to help our local government gain awareness of the problems our citizens living are facing in at-risk communities.
How are we different from similar community movements?
We Clean Up! Not only is every case of demonstrated need we collect destined for presentation to the local and federal authorities, but we also provide a Day of Impact to the citizen in need.
"Day of Impact" brings together volunteers, organizations and the community to clean and tidy up the homes of our citizens in need. The money raised throughout this campaign will be used to purchase all the work and safety equipment necessary to realize the labor.
We will also utilize the money to feed our volunteers and provide them with a low-cost t-shirt for identification and safety purposes during the event.
Why did I become a Community Organizer?
Before I became an F/A-18 fighter pilot in the United States Marine Corps, I was proudly born to a car mechanic (dad) and a janitor (mom) who raised me to be a person of service right here in Fajardo, Puerto Rico.
My goal with this initiative is to give back to the community that helped me have a better life, and Love Brigade is an expression of that gratitude.
What’s the point of all this?
Love Brigade exists to improve the quality of life of the people of Fajardo through advocacy, education and intervention. As a former Marine and young combat veteran, I take this mission very seriously.
I will continue providing frequent updates to this project with pictures and real stories from the field. We’re excited to receive your donation so we can continue to serve our community with excellence and distinction.
