IIT Design Build: Rural Clinic

Currently, students of the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Design-Build Studio are studying and designing to build a small health clinic in the remote village in Jabung, Indonesia. Since 2005, this studio has put together a diverse portfolio of built work, both locally, and internationally, and in the Spring and Summer of 2015, the next page will be written in Indonesia.
Who We Are
We are a collection of 4th year undergraduate architecture students studying under Professor Frank Flury, who has headed every project since 2005. We have meticulously studied the area, from its vernacular architecture, to its climate, to its economy, and we are confident that our design will have a lasting impact on the community.
The Impact of Our Efforts
The village where we will be building is in a mountainous region in the Northwest corner of Magetan, Indonesia. From here, it is difficult to reach a hospital in an emergency. In most cases, the effected patients wait for care within the community, resulting in the undesirable and dangerous exposure of family and friends. Our facility will provide them with a safe and sterile place to stay while awaiting a doctor's arrival. It is also directly adjacent to an existing elementary school, giving the sick children a place to get immediate care.
What We Need
The remote village does not possess the funding to complete this building.
In order to make this project a reality, we need to raise money to buy materials such as masonry, steel rebar, lumber, and concrete. Additional materials will also be purchased to furnish the clinic with units that are built in house.
All funds are dedicated to the construction and completion of the health clinic. All design, labor, and logistic costs for travel will paid for by the students themselves.
