My name is Nicole Kuykendall I am 26 years old. I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma on my 22nd birthday and underwent numerous chemo treatments and radiation. I was then diagnosed with secondary bone cancer after recieving radiation. In February 2013 I was finally told that I was in remission and I then underwent a donor bone marrow transplant, my day one of transplant was March 8, 2013. I was in intensive care for two weeks of the transplant with many complications. I fought my way to be able to still have my wedding that I had been planning for two years in June of 2013, although I was not at my best.
After being able to come home in June I had a hard road to get my strength back. In October of 2013 I was diagnosed with GVHD Disease of the skin, eyes, mouth and lungs.
GVHD of the skin causes me to have spots all over that I am very self conscious of, GVHD of the eyes and mouth causes them to be very dry all the time.
The GVHD of the lungs is the one that causes the most struggle. It is call Bronchilitis Obliterans and is a very rare disease that causes the bronchial airways to turn into cartilage so it is difficult to breath when I move around too much. I need help when doing most daily activities because of this. I need help taking showers, getting dressed, cooking meals and getting around.
Due to all of these problems and all the medications that I am on I am unable to work because I do not have an immune system and get sick very easily. I continue to undergo treatments to try and help with my breathing and am always hoping for advancements in medicine and new treatments to come along to help even more.
I was hospitalized on November 11,2014 for pneumonia and I was not able to breath and was taken to the hospital by ambulance in very bad shape, I was there until December 1. Because of not being able to walk due to my breathing I was very weak before going to the hospital and while being there for all those weeks and not being able to get out of bed I am now unable to stand or walk. I have to have 24/7 care and have to have physical therapy to relearn how to stand myself up and how to walk. This is made even more difficult because I have trouble breathing. So, this is a very hard and frustrating task.
To add a little bit about who I am personally, I have a husband who I do not know what I would do without, he has helped me through a lot of rough times and helped me keep fighting when I was ready to give up. I also have two dogs are my world! They are the kids that I can no longer have because of treatments. I enjoy to read and scrapbook and I used to love to cook and bake but now that is a difficult task to undertake.
