Share the Art of Puppetry

Hello,
My name is Chris Hamby and I am a puppet enthusiast and theater professional. Like most puppet people my passion for puppetry began when I was young and my introduction to the work of Jim Henson. Growing up and school and no real outlet for learning puppetry I had nowhere to take that passion. In high school I was a "drama kid" but also a bit of a rebel. One night I heavily contemplated dropping out of high school and planned to make the announcement the next day. That night I had insomnia and turned on my 12 inch TV in my bedroom and PBS was airing, "The World of Jim Henson". It changed my life. I decided to stay in school and inspired by the passion of creating for children of Jim Henson decided to dedicate my work to working with young people. I currently am an education director of a theater company and have directed almost 80 productions for young people. Additionally, I have been a teaching artist for over 15 years and have worked in sharing my love of theater with young people all of my adult life. In recent years I have had the priviledge of working with Georgia puppeteer David Stephens. He has a been a great mentor to me and to my current puppet projects. However, having had no formal puppetry education my work has been self taught or gleaned from retreats and short workshops.
However...I now have the opportunity to study with the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia and take away some great training that I will not only be able to share with my fellow puppeters but all of the young people that I work with. I am very excited about this opportunity and any help that my friends and those in their extended networks can possibly provide to help make this a reality would be immensely appreciated. I don't have anything to give other than my sincere thanks and the knowledge that you are helping my passion manifest into reality and in a small way making the world a better place by allowing me to spread art even further to the young people of the world.

Funds raised will be used for the program tuition, roundtrip airfare to Halifax, Nova Scotia and 3 weeks of lodging and accomodations in Windsor. I am also pursuing a very small grant to help with professional development. Any amount donated gets me one step closer to my goal.
