For a few years I've been making light of a distressing medical situation by turning it into a meme... but the not-so-amusing truth is that an expert team of psychiatrists, therapists, surgeons and medical doctors all vehemently agree: I need $37,210 (to pay for vital, life-changing, medically necessary surgery). So instead of continuing to crack jokes about how I will never be able to get $37,210 and how much it sucks to need $37,210, I've decided to ask you for $37,210 instead.
I have been suffering physically, spiritually and psychologically for decades… and it has been the expert medical opinion of every single doctor I have spoken to that I will continue to experience active, ongoing trauma every day of my life until I am able to access this treatment. So, with that in mind, it was probably a bad idea to constantly make and share jokes about it to the point where people I have never met or interacted with have approached me in public, amused and wanting to be "in on the joke," to ask if I "got that $37,210 yet."
After an extensive series of physical and psychological evaluations, my team of doctors and I have arrived at a comprehensive surgical plan which we are confident will provide massive relief to my pain and radically improve my life. My entire care team agrees that it is profoundly urgent for me to get treatment as soon as possible, and we have been discussing surgery dates around end of year 2018—just a few short months from now.
I have already spent most of my life's savings (and gone into debt) trying to access care for this specific set of problems, and what remains will barely make a dent in the final cost of the operation I need. I have been fighting hard to get some of the procedures covered by my health insurance, but even in the best case scenario I will only be able to get them to cover a small fraction of the treatment plan my doctors have put together.
