Hi, my name is Steven and I have a story to tell about myself. When I was born I was a perfectly healthy baby boy. I lived a great life with my family. I was always happy, I could run around and play with my dog and friends. That all changed when I turned 3. One morning I woke up and could barely move my mom said. My condition never improved so they took me to the local doctor and their initial diagnosis was lymes disease from a tick that bit me. That test came back negative and my health was getting worse. I was barely moving my joints and was often covered in a rash from head to toe. They sent us to the Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I spent several months there having tests done and getting physical therapy before they finally diagnosed me with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) at the age of 3. My life from that point completely changed. I spent most of the first 18 years of my life living in hospitals. They put me on large doses of children’s aspirin until my liver shut down completely. I became even sicker and was bed ridden for most of age 4 until they gave me chemo to combat all the meds I was on at such a young age. All the doctors my mom talked to told her at the rate my body was failing I would most likely be in a wheelchair the rest of my life. She couldn’t believe what the doctors were telling her. I wouldn’t be stopped though. Once I was old enough to comprehend what was happening to me and seeing all the other kids running, jumping and just having fun playing. I knew I wanted out of that chair. I went to PT and fought my hardest to get out of that thing. It stuck with me all through school and into college. I had a scholarship to Johnson & Wales University to pursue my dream of being a chef. Unfortunately I couldn’t complete school from my arthritis and my dream went away. So I went back to PT and fighting to get out of the chair. I’m proud to tell you I’ve been out of that thing for 8 years now and my arthritis is almost completely in remission. I’m dieting and working out daily to get to a point I can run around and lead a kitchen staff. I haven’t given up on my dreams and I never will. However not being able to complete school has left me with piles of student loans and dept from hospital bills. All I want is to be able to get a fresh start and go back to school. School ain’t cheap though lol. I’m not asking for a ton just a few dollars to help make my dream finally happen. Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Have a blessed day.
