I Hid My Pain So I Could Survive!

Pet Patrol is an entirely volunteer-run, non-profit cat rescue organization in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. All our cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and any health concerns are addressed before they are available for adoption. My name is Spencer, but some people call me Wild Boy.

I don’t remember much about being a kitten and as long as I can remember I have been on my own. I tried to find shelter in sheds and barns, but have been chased by people and other animals who would try to attack me.  They didn't want to share their meager food portions with a newcomer.  I did not trust people and continued to roam from place to place.   It's a good thing I was such a good hunter, because I kept myself alive by catching rats and mice in the fields.
Daily I would sit on the edge of a corn field, scanning for prey, and one day I saw someone approaching. I dove into the corn stalks in fear.  Would she chase me away, as other people had?  Instead she put down a big bowl and moved far enough away that I felt safe checking out the contents. It was food! I gratefully ate it all, then I found shelter under a garden shed where I could sleep.  Every day after that I returned for the food but now I had new worries.  Where would I go when winter came?
Then one miserable day I was rescued in a humane trap and taken inside. What was happening? I found myself in Pet Patrol's sanctuary which is warm and dry, with plenty of food and fresh water, but the walls and doors and ceilings confused me.  Within a few days I went to the vet, had a sleep and when I woke up I was neutered and had all my vaccinations.  But the vet discovered my terrible, painful teeth.  Some of them are infected, broken off or just rotten.  The vet was surprised that I was still able to eat, but did comment on my low weight.  I ate because I had to, I was determined to live.
Pet Patrol is determined as well, and does not give up on the cats in their care.  Even for a 'wild boy' like me who still hisses and growls at everyone, they feel I deserve to live without pain and have the dental surgery I need.   Many people would not agree because I am considered feral, not social and may never take to being touched or pet.  I know the people at Pet Patrol are taking good care of me, but I won’t feel better until I have the dental surgery. It will cost $950! Pet Patrol is looking for generous people to contribute to the cost. When my mouth stops hurting, maybe I can begin to trust. And then no one will call me Wild Boy anymore.
