GLP SANI: sex-worker aid network initiative

Sex Workers around the world are carrying the weight of stigma on our backs amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Seattle sex workers are extremely at risk.

Seattle currently has the largest number of cases of COVID-19 in the United States, with over 190 people currently being treated for the virus. The widespread panic surrounding the pandemic has left and is still leaving sex workers in extremely precarious financial situations as more and more clients are afraid to see sex workers. This, coupled with major dips in the stock market, are impacting workers in the Seattle area tremendously, and many are struggling to find work and stay alive during this time.

The Greenlight Project is a Seattle-based Harm Reduction effort that provides direct outreach to street-based sex workers and drug users. We are a majority sex-worker led group of peers. We rely on individual donations and mutual support to continue to provide aid to our community members who are most marginalized and made most at risk by COVID-19.

Most sex workers are unable to take off time, pre-emptively self-quarantine, or ride out the lack of clients until work picks up again. Indoor workers and dancers have been increasingly turning to street based work in this time, exposing themselves to more coercive clients and less safe working conditions. We need this fund to keep our community housed, fed, and well cared-for as we as a country manage the COVID-19 pandemic and its surrounding panic.

Sex workers often operate without savings or social safety nets of any kind. We have few, if any, labor rights, and do not have paid days off or other privileges that would allow us to continue to function with such a decrease in our client base. The most marginalized of us are the most at risk, and have nowhere to turn when clients stop coming to see us.

This fund is raising money to support sex workers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in Seattle and the surrounding areas. We are asking for donations and help from allies, clients, organizations, and workers not impacted by the pandemic so that we can take care of our community during this uncertain time! We are prioritizing the needs of street based workers, trans, POC, and immuno-compromised workers. We will be using it to purchase medications, sanitation supplies, toiletries, as well as provide cash support for bills and rent.
