Help for Andrew's Medical Expenses

Dear Friends, Family, and other kind souls:

I am extremely sad, shaken, and in disbelief to share that there has been a traumatic pedicab accident where Andrew Woodward, pedicab driver for Movemint Pedicab, was ejected from his bicycle into the middle of a high traffic road after being hit by a automobile. According to his boss, it was by far the worst pedicab driver injury-related accident he has personally witnessed in the 15 years he has been in the industry.

On Sunday, 11/21/21 ~1:30AM, while conducting a pedicab fare on the Congress St Bridge, Andrew was struck by an automobile. Andrew was traveling in Austin's incredibly well-protected bike lanes, when a speeding car leaving the downtown area plowed through the protected bike lanes, over and through the bolsters, then hit Andrew’s pedicab from behind.

After being ejected from the pedicab, Andrew landed on the pavement, in the traffic lane. He remained conscious although thinking he was paralyzed and unable to move his arms or legs. In those immediate moments, he was helpless and terrified that he could be struck by other vehicles crossing the bridge. His main concern as he was laying there was the safety of his passenger and repeatedly asked if he was ok.

Thankfully, a young woman walking southbound on the Congress bridge at the time witnessed the accident and immediately came to his aid. Andrew asked not to be moved until first responders could arrive, she complied with this request. She and another witness directed traffic around Andrew so he would not be struck by vehicles crossing the bridge. She promptly called 911 and followed their directions to help stop the bleeding. The pedicab was broken into pieces and lay across the travel lanes.

First responders quickly arrived on the scene, stabilized Andrew’s neck and back, and immediately transported him to a nearby Level 1 Trauma Center. Andrew was admitted to the Emergency Department at the hospital, quickly evaluated & promptly transferred to Surgical ICU. There he underwent a 10-hour emergency surgery for a broken neck, with two crushed vertebrae. His neurosurgeon later said the injury was only one millimeter from leaving him permanently paralyzed.

I am creating this fundraiser as the young woman mentioned above who witnessed this horrific accident. All funds will be directed to Andrew and his family.

Andrew is expected to recover, there is no injury to his brain, nor any signs of paralysis, however, he remains in great pain with a long journey of recovery still ahead of him.

I ASK AND INVITE YOU ALL TO CONSIDER DONATING TO ANDREW’S ROAD TO RECOVERY!

Please keep Andrew and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
