Hygiene Station Project

In October 2020, The Social Justice Action Center (SJAC) launched a Hygiene Station to support the unhoused community during the COVID-19 pandemic. We need your help to help us to continue to expand open hours and sustain the project through winter and as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on.

The pandemic has greatly reduced public restroom availability, and many experiencing houselessness are left with few options of places to wash their hands, use the restroom and carry out their most basic hygiene needs. The hygiene station at SJAC helps to provide much needed community hygiene resources, including an outdoor hand washing station, open hours for bathroom access , informational flyers and personal hygiene supplies. The program compensates unhoused and formerly unhoused community members for their time maintaining the space, providing a modest supplemental income during a time of economic crisis.

Help us keep our doors open. A donation of $25 supports an hour of a community member’s time doing outreach and maintaining the space. $100 provides 15 hygiene care packages for the unhoused including hand sanitizer, facemasks, socks, deodorant and other hygiene items. A donation of $250 keeps us open another night, allowing two community members to staff the space, keep hot coffee flowing and give out essential PPE and hygiene supplies.

Community partners have come together to help with this project including Right 2 Survive, Stop the Sweeps PDX, Sisters of the Road, Bonneville Environmental Foundation, Keys, Beats, Bars, Northwest Alliance for Alternative Media and Education and Reclaim, Remain, Rebuild.
