Seven years ago, I had lost hope, I had lost purpose, I had lost my kids, and I had lost myself. Today I am a helper, I have regained purpose and found hope, my children--along with my soon to be husband—and I share a loving home, and I have grown into the woman I want to be. Now my goal is to help others find what they have lost.
My name is Courtni Wright I am a Wake County Rapid Responder. As a Peer Support Specialist on a Post Overdose Response team,. my job is to understand, collaborate, and guide folks on their recovery journey. Much of my time is spent getting to know people and linking them to various resources that can help them take control of their lives. Providing them the life-saving, overdose-reversing medicine naloxone (Narcan)so they can see the light of another day is one of the resources that is provided many times. As a Scotland County native, my heart hurts seeing so many people trapped and suffering with substance use disorders.
My hometown is dying. Scotland County has a population of 34,967 individuals. 6,651 individuals experienced an overdose death from 2014 to 2018. 142.7% is the rate of retail opioid prescription rate dispensed per 100 persons, while the statewide is only 72%. Mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters died because Narcan was not readily available. Rich counties have the resources, Scotland County does not. Scotland County EMS is dependent on another county for Naloxone so they can keep our people alive.
I want to raise $2000.00 and purchase Narcan for those in Scotland County. Once it is purchased, I will distribute the life-saving medicine to those in need. No matter how far down we have fallen, everyone deserves grace; everyone deserves life. I thank God for giving me breath and the opportunity to change my life.
