My Journey Back to Kenya

Donation protected
Hello Everyone

My name is Soupie. Last year, I had the pleasure of travelling to Kenya and South Africa in association with international volunteer HQ and the network for voluntary services (NVS).  When I arrived in Kenya I was welcomed in a Maasai village called Saikeri.  Saikeri is located at the base of the Rift Valley in Kenya, south west of Narobi.  Many in the village live in  very poor environment and I was able to see the poverty first hand.  Although they live in difficult conditions, I was astonished by the support of all members in the family to make ends meet, especially the children.

For many school aged children in the village of Saikeri and in South Africa, they struggle to receive the basic right of education.  The lack of necessities of life such as water, food, health care, and other factors create a barrier for learning.  As much as this is the case, many children in the region understand the importance of education and walk approximately 2 hours each way to attend the only school close to their region.

During my previous visit my goal was to help bridge the gap to some of the barriers these children face.  In Kenya we were able to accomplish many things such as sponsor a high school student for one year, hire a teacher, purchase new desks and chairs, build classrooms, as well as teach some classes to the students ourselves.   In South Africa, we volunteered our time in a daycare, purchased tables, chairs and a stove. At both projects we tried to provide a supportive and secure environment that would allow the children to pursue a social and academic education.  In other words, we tried to provide the children with a chance at life.

Although much was accomplished, I feel there is still more to be done.  This is why I've decided in January 2015, to go back and hoping to work with NVS once I'm in Kenya.

My goals for this visit include:

 -  Building 4 classrooms, which would complete a combined primary and intermediate school.  This would allow the students to complete their schooling in one building without having to walk to another region, approximately 1 hour away, to attend intermediate school.

 -  Equip each classroom with access to clean water by purchasing and installing water tanks that would gather and retain rain water. The students travel long distances to attend school and in doing so, many children arrive at school dehydrated. The installation of water tanks will provide the students with the needed access to fresh water.

 -  Assist in the planning and construction of the school by hiring builders and purchasing materials.  Since this work is within the community, it will provide the village of Saikeri with jobs and help kickstart their economy.

- Hire and more importantly, train new teachers.

- Purchase more desks and chairs for each of the classrooms.

 - Continue paying the tuition for the high school student we sponsored last year.

To do this, I’m once again asking for your help.  To reach these objectives, I'm hoping to raise as much money as possible but have created a goal of $15,000.  This money will be invested directly into the needs of the children and village of Saikeri.

With a donation of $35 , I will include a 2015 calendar containing pictures that I’ve taken during my travels and I will ship it WORLDWIDE. Every dollar counts, so please donate whatever you can.  (Please note, if you would like a calendar, please donate before Jan 15 2015)

Donations will be accepted until March 2015.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!! :)

*** Anyone who donated $100 or more last year, please message me your favourtite photo from the calendar and I will mail you a frame photo before Jan 2015.

This year I am excited to announce that I am working with dear friends that I had the pleasure of volunteering  with in Kenya and South Africa. We will be working hard to acheive our fundraising goal.  Thank you so much everyone.
