Dickinson church damaged by Harvey

Donation protected
First Presbyterian Church of Dickinson, Texas, which we grew up attending, has sustained significant damage in wake of Hurricane Harvey. Though we no longer live in the area (Erin lives in College Station, Texas, and Allie lives in Iowa), our mother still attends services there and is a member of the session (church governing body). We are friends with many who worship there.

The funds we raise will be used to help repair and replace parts of the church that have been damaged or destroyed -- including the piano, organ, pews, carpeting, sheetrock, painting, hymnal and Bibles. A local social service agency has an office there, and we will also use the funds raised to replace lost food for the pantry and to help with repairs/replacements to things like flooring, Sheetrock, office furniture, coolers and other needs. The money raised will be given to our mother, Marilee Norred, on behalf of the church. As a member of the church's governing body, she will ensure it is spent appropriately.

This is a place that means so much to us and to the people who worship there. We know recovery will be difficult, so we wanted to see if we could make the process a little easier. Here is a letter from the Rev. Kathy Sebring, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Dickinson, with more information about the church, its ministries and its needs at this time:

"Friends,

Hurricane Harvey has hit southeast Texas hard. The city of Dickinson has been devastated. As you may know from national news, There was a mandatory evacuation of the entire city.

News reports and videos have revealed that First Presbyterian Church of Dickinson's buildings were under more than 5 feet of water. The exact extent of the damage to the church is uncertain, but the recovery process from Harvey will be extensive.

First Presbyterian Church of Dickinson has been a vital part of the community since 1957, a loving community of worshipers that serve Dickinson in practical as well as spiritual ways;

 we partner with M.I. Lewis Social Service Center, housing them and their food pantry in our Fellowship Hall;
 our diaper ministry provides diapers and baby wipes to M.I. Lewis and UTMB Early Childhood Intervention.

That is why we are sending this special plea for financial support to assist with repairs to our church and rebuilding of our various mission efforts, including support to M.I. Lewis. As we assess the damage, we will be able to determine more specific needs for future assistance and update this information further.

The community needs us now more than ever. With our partner M.I. Lewis, we will help rebuild the lives of the people of Dickinson. With God and His people, we will provide comfort, aid and spiritual guidance. With your help, we will continue the ministry God has called us to provide.

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be
scorched, Nor will the flame burn you.” Isaiah 43:2 (New American Standard Bible)

God Bless You,

Rev. Kathy Sebring"
