Hurricane Ida destroyed Rabbit Rescue

We never intended to evacuate. We also never expected to be in the bullseye of Hurricane Ida with 27 rabbits in a 3 bedroom trailer.

I’m Donna Rome, founder of BunnAgain Rabbit Rescue and Education in Paradis

I was being urged to leave, but if I left, the rescue rabbits were leaving too.

Stuffed to the ceiling in a tiny hatchback, we drove to a family member’s brick home and rode out the storm in a spare bedroom with bunnies in every available carrier and even cardboard boxes.

We survived but the sweltering heat caused many rabbits to blow their coats, and become heat stressed. We could get no news from the outside world for 36 hours, due to storm damage.

Unfortunately, Ida settled over us for a 6 hour tour of the area.

.She made sure to snap every available light pole, uprooting and splitting trees (including our bottle brush tree, willow and cypress) and peel nearly the entirety of the tin off of our home like an old can of Spam.

This is where we are now:

Bare plywood roof, leaking water into 75% of the trailer, everything cooking in the dampness. We will not have power for 4-6 weeks and all our possessions and supplies are being consumed by fungus.

The rescue can no longer operate until we tear down and rebuild. We had no insurance.

We were able to reach out to a rescue friend, who in turn, reached out on our behalf for help. The rabbits have made their way to safety, but so many more are out there needing help, we’ll need yours to get up and running again. Your donations will go toward rebuilding and repairs, as well as finishing out the FlopHouse building so the rabbits can have a climate controlled building of their own. We are looking into the possibility of relocation if possible. See our Facebook page for updates!

You can make a difference by donating today to Bunnagain Rabbit Rescue and Education (BunnAgain).

At BunnAgain Rabbit Rescue and Education, we rescue, rehabilitate, house, and spay/neuter domestic rabbits. We house and care for them until a qualified adoption takes place. We also strive to educate the public on responsible pet ownership, with focus on the specific needs and advantages of having of house rabbits. We also provide information and resources at public events to raise awareness and prevent impulse buying of rabbits. especially at Easter. We have plans to implement a visiting rabbit program in conjunction with Bunnies In Baskets, to further promote the joy of house rabbits.
