Hurricane Helene Assistance
Hi friends,
We're stepping pretty far outside our comfort zone for this one and asking for assistance from those who are capable while we recover from Hurricane Helene.
A storm surge in our neighborhood flooded the canals and our house took in between 14 inches and 2 feet of water. The neighborhood sewer drains also backed up so we're assuming we took on water from that as well, like many other houses in the neighborhood did. Many of our possessions that were in water tight containers were knocked over from the incoming surge and took on water.
While we're very extremely thankful that our family was able to safely evacuate, we're facing many financial, physical, and mental challenges. All the appliances, cabinetry, flooring, and drywall (up to a specific height) will need to be replaced. Even after these steps are completed, the house will still be considered uninhabitable until plumbing is assessed and issues identified by the electrician are fixed.
In the mean time, we've been jumping between AirBnBs that accept all 5 of the furbabies while working at the house during the day, and we'll continue to do so until the host is seemed habitable. On top of the living expenses and insurance deductible, we'll also have many days where we'll need to leave the dogs at daycare if both of us are needed at the house or if one of us is fully occupied with work.
We're hoping that after the deductible, insurance will cover everything. That will be a battle on two fronts because we have to fight with flood insurance to cover property damage, and prove to home owners insurance that there was sewage back up so that they'll cover stay and food expenses. These expenses will all be out of pocket until insurance approves to reimburse (hopefully this is a matter of when and not if).
