Help Hurricane Florence Caregivers

Donation protected
As providers of in-home care for seniors, one can imagine the impact of Hurricane Florence on our clients and caregivers at Comfort Keepers®.

Because of this horrific storm, many of our caregivers and clients had to evacuate Wilmington. They left their community in this time of terror, and in some cases, did not know whether they had lost their own homes and belongings.

This fund has been established to help these heroic caregivers get back on their feet and help sustain them while they begin the rebuilding process.

Hurricane Florence barreled her way toward our coast the week of September 10th, leaving most parts of our community devastated by ongoing flooding, damaging winds, and widespread power outages. Several of our clients, caregivers, and office staff evacuated southeastern North Carolina to seek refuge from the historical storm, unsure of when they would all be able to return.

On the morning of September 10th, our office began to receive numerous calls from clients and caregivers about their plans for the storm. Most evacuated or went to shelters. Our office continued to work over the next couple of days to ensure all of our clients and caregivers were ready for the storm before we closed the office. We tried to have some caregivers stay with clients who required around-the-clock care for the duration of the storm.

As the storm’s wrath continued throughout the weekend, Florence’s slow forward speed allowed thunderstorms to drench the same parts of our area for days on end, leading to the historic flooding that killed dozens of people and left a large swath of the affected region without power and largely unreachable by car.

The caregivers of Comfort Keepers of Wilmington lost almost all their working hours. Most lost all cold/frozen food due to power outages that lasted a week or more. Others lost everything. Some of our clients and caregivers were heavily impacted by Hurricane Florence. Below are some examples of what a few select people went through. None are able to work until operations are fully back up and running.

• Mary went to a shelter in Raleigh on 9/11/18. Due to impassable roads, she was unable to return to her home until 9/22/18. When she arrived home, she found extensive damage to her home, including 12 inches of water flooding the inside. Additionally, her home sustained damage to the roof, siding, and patio.

• Klisha stayed in her home during the storm. Unfortunately, her family’s home was flooded, and they lost nearly everything including furniture, clothing, and other personal items.

•  Mona stayed in the area during the storm, and her family also lost nearly everything. Part of their roof/ceilings collapsed allowing water to continue to devastate their home.

Our community has truly come together during this time to help one another. We are very grateful for all of the linemen, first responders, and other teams who came into our area to help our community recover from this disaster. We will continue to help all of our affected clients, caregivers, and others in the community to overcome the devastation left by Hurricane Florence.
