I am a principal of a PreK-5 school in rural Tidewater of VA. As my time of being a principal, I have seen student lunch debt increase. It has become more difficult for some parents to balance paying off student lunch debt. So with that, I want to be able to give students an option. Reading to get out the lunch debt. It is a win-win.
Hungry for a Good Book Program would allow the student to read to pay off their lunch debts.
For students PreK-2, a AR .5 points would be worth $1 of debt
For students 3-5, 1 AR point would be worth $1 of debt.
I would target students who had over $10 and over. I have some that are as high as $200. In my letter, I would ask the parents if they would like to opt-in for the program.
I would like to set up a go fund me to help with the cost of this project. I want them to be able to eat. A lunch debt is a parent issue and not a student issue.
This program would only be for the students who have debt and who opt into the program.
It was weighing heavy on my heart to try to find a solution.
You would be donating to make sure that students continue to get healthy meals and reading at the same time. Thank you for your consideration.
