Teaching in Hajdúszoboszló, Hungary

Time to make the official announcement: As of May 7, I have been accepted to teach English at an elementary school in (brace yourself) Hajduszoboszlo, Hungary! I'll be going with a friend (Ainsley Rynders: http://www.gofundme.com/7crvt8) through the Central European Teaching Program (CETP), an organization that places native English speakers in regions where English-language skills are in high demand.

Having lived in Budapest for a semester in 2011, I am eager to reinvest in Hungary and its people in a long-term way. First-time-teacher nerves aside, I'm excited to work with kids, to see how another country's education system functions, to learn new stories and new perspectives, to better understand Hungary's culture and history, to make public transportation part of my daily routine, to be aware and involved with local/national issues, to travel around the region, and to depend on the hospitality of the Hajduszoboszlo community. Though I'll be a teacher, I understand that this will be just as much a learning experience for me as it will be for my students, and it is my hope that I can create a space where children (as well as I) feel curious, confident, and happy to learn.

Orientation begins in Budapest on August 22, but in order to make it out there, I need quite a bit of financial help. I've set a goal of raising $6,000, which will be used to cover program fees (this includes my rent for the school year), TEFL certification, airfare, and living expenses prior to receiving my first paycheck. It will also go towards the payment of a private loan that I took out the first time I went to Hungary, and which cannot be deferred.

I know this is every fundraiser's favorite tagline, but I truly appreciate any amount you see fit to give. There are a whole lot of beautiful causes out there, and I'm just a post-grad girl looking for somewhere to work and continue learning. I'd be honored to have your help.

Also, if you have any wisdom or literature to share, please get in touch! Your words are just as valuable as dollar signs, as I can't possibly envision what's around the river-bend!

With love and gratitude,

Chelsea
