Humanising human rights radio show

Hi folks,

I have co-presented a radio show called the Wake Up Call on UCC 98.3fm for the last two years.

The radio project I wish to get off the ground with your kind donations is tentatively called "Humanising Human Rights".

We hear talk about human rights all the time in the media and most people recognise that it is vitally important that our State takes action to protect human rights and provide effective remedies when they are breached.

One of the ways that the Irish State shows its commitment to safeguarding human rights is by signing international conventions, such as the United Nations Convention Against Torture and Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment, and then submitting periodic reports on progress made in this area.

Ireland will be examined before the UN Committee Against Torture in Geneva at the end of July and my plan is to be there to record audio for a radio show/podcast in order to give people a "behind the scenes" insight into how the UN Treaty monitoring system works, and how the process can, and does, lead to much needed change on the ground.

My plan is interview members of the Irish NGO sector who will be presenting oral submissions to the Committee on matters relating to gender-based violence, reproductive rights (Repeal the 8th) and issues related to prison and the Gardai. I will also interview officials from the State delegation, as well as members of the Committee Against Torture itself.

When I get back to Ireland, I will edit the material and broadcast roughly 20 minutes of audio on UCC 98.3fm in September.
