Our Market Manager travels to various locations seeking new farmers, growers and beekeepers; cottage industry artisans, bakers, and chefs. She scours the internet for potential new vendors who meet our guidelines. Our Board members and volunteers constantly strive to improve our knowledge and share it with our community.
We offer educational information related to gardening; preparing meals; healthy lifestyle choices and the Blue Zone Project.
Beginning 2022 we will kick off our Blue Zone Project in an effort to have a long-lasting impact on the health and well-being of our community.
DISCOVERING BLUE ZONES
In 2004, Dan Buettner teamed with National Geographic, the National Institute on Aging, and the world's best longevity researchers to identify pockets around the world where people lived measurably better, longer. In these five areas, dubbed "blue zones," researchers found that people reach age 100 at a rate that is ten times greater than in the United States and with lower rates of chronic disease.
IDENTIFYING THE POWER 9
After locating the world's blue zones areas, Buettner and National Geographic took teams of scientists to each location to pinpoint lifestyle characteristics that might explain the unusual longevity. They found that though the blue zones communities are located in vastly different parts of the world, their residents share nine specific traits that lead to longer, healthier, happier lives. We call these the Power 9®.

Loved Ones First
Our Blue Zone Project Goals at Hueytown Harvest Farmers Market, Inc. are to work with local grocery stores; daycares; schools to introduce budget-friendly, healthy food choices; to work with community leaders to develop and encourage the development of walking paths; sidewalks; gathering spaces; community gardens; etc that are free to the community; to encourage our friends, family and community members to join the commitment to a healthy lifestyle both physically and mentally.
This project will span over several years. 2022 will be the initial year and will involve a lot of time invested in education and marketing. It will involve traveling and meeting throughout our city and surrounding communities. a three-year estimate for the cost of this project is $225,000.00.
