Huancayo Children's Fund

As most of you may know, I have spent the past three weeks volunteering in Huancayo, Peru with only one more week to go! My time here has gone by so quickly, thanks to these wonderful children I have had the opportunity to get to know and grow to love. Monday through Friday we walk a half hour each way to work at an elementary school and teach English; Monday is first grade, Tuesday is second grade, and so on. There are anywhere from 10-20 kids in each grade. The kids are very smart and intuitive considering the limited resources they have.  In the afternoons the other volunteers and I work at an after school program, named Makikita. At Makikita we help the kids with homework, play games, do arts and crafts, and have some intense volleyball games! There are about 40 kids from ages 3 to 12. All of the kids who are a part of Makikita also attend the school where we teach.

I have learned a lot in these past few weeks and I owe every bit of that to the children. I decided to volunteer because I wanted to be around kids who would teach me to appreciate life in a new way. Spending so much time with these kids has helped me to realize that it doesn't matter how poor you are or how little you have. What matters is that you treat others with kindness, compassion, and love and lead a life giving to those who are less fortunate.
