My name is Allen. I am a cancer survivor of 30 years. Back in 1987 I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Through surgery I was cancer free for 2 years. In 1989 my cancer returned and I had to go through multiple chemotherapy treatments and surgery over the next year.
Fast forward 25 years. Even though the testicular cancer has remained in remission over the years, I have had several side effects due to the high concentration of drugs used to treat the cancer. One of these side effects was found during a routine follow-up. During the follow-up, I was found to have irregular blood counts, low immune disorders, and irregular blast in the bone marrow. Through several bone marrow aspirations, I was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome a form of Leukemia. As a result, I had to go through another round of chemotherapy that lasted a year. Unfortunately, the treatment did not address the Myelodysplastic Syndrome. Currently I must have blood work and routine bone marrow aspirations to monitor the progress of the Leukemia. This has been a costly endeavor.
Most recently, I have received more bad news about my health issues. A week ago, I was admitted to the hospital with internal bleeding. The bleeding was controlled and I have since found the reason for the bleeding. I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cirrhosis of the Liver, even though I have never drunk alcoholic beverages my entire life. This has all been because of the Chemotherapy drugs used over the years to treat the cancer and Leukemia. Even the doctors were puzzled by the findings of the liver. This is an important part of the story, because this is not a test that doctors normally perform. All blood work over the years have not shown any signs of the disease. This is something I want to share with everyone to ensure testing when possible.
Now, I’m unable to work full-time and need help with medical bills and medicine associated with the current treatment program my doctors have me on. I also have several doctors’ appointments and further testing in the immediate future that will require additional monies to complete.
Thank you for reading my story and helping my family and myself with any contributions that you can make. If you have any questions about my illness or concerns please feel free to write me and I will be more than happy to answer you personally. I will keep everyone updated on the progress of the treatments.
Allen is my younger brother and a great guy. I ask for any help and we greatly appreciate it. Hopefully this will help with all the medical bills until he can get back on his feet.
