Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to read this.
My brother, Eric suffered a massive blood clot on his brain (stroke) on January 4 (this was just days after his son was released from the hospital with a broken neck).
Eric was rushed to the emergency room and rushed into emergency surgery immediately. After about 5 hours, the surgeon came out and let us know that this blood clot took up one side of his brain. He said that after almost losing Eric on the table, they were able to save him. On a CT scan the following day, it showed that Eric had suffered another brain bleed, (in the interior part of his brain) but they didn't see it originally, because the original blood clot was so massive.
The surgeon prepared us for a long road to recovery with a lot of rehab. He wasn't wrong. Eric was on a ventilator tube until January 15th. He continued to spike fevers and he spent the majority of January in ICU. Finally he was transferred to another unit in the hospital. He still does not have a significant portion of his skull, because they have to wait until all of the swelling has going down and ensure no other blood clots form, to replace it.
Although he could not eat food without aspirating, walk without a lot of assistance and he did not have his skull replaced, the hospital discharged him at 8:00p.m. on Monday, January 29th. They did so without any prior notice to his family.
We weren't able to prepare his home for his needs, we didn't have the almost $200 for the 18 perscriptions they sent him home with him (that only covered 3 days worth of treatment), nor did we have a wheel chair, walker or anything else that he would need in the coming days, (when Sarah mentioned this to the hospital - prior to discharge, they told her "that was a personal problem").
Eric and his wife had to stay in a motel that night, while we frantically went to prepare his home so that he could safely return.
Eric was denied rehabilitation because he did not have insurance. You see, Eric is a stay-at-home dad. He is very hands on with his daughter, and while his wife, Sarah has insurance through her job, and his daughter has insurance, they could not afford the extra payment for Eric to be covered as well.
Currently, Eric is in need of rehabilitation through physical and occupational therapy. He is in need of numerous medications, and the basic needs, such as help with his rent, utilities, etc. , because even though his wife does have a job, she is currently on leave to care for him. This leave does not provide pay for lost income, it simply holds her job until she can return.
We have applied for Eric to receive disability, Medicaid and food stamps, but these things take time to start coming in.
If you are able to help, this money would go towards Eric's medications, his living expenses and hopefully the start of his rehabilitation. Ths situation is extremely urgent, as they do not have money for his rent nor his medication as of today.
