Help U.S. Veterans: Save Post 1218!

An organization that started from a hole in the ground, thus the nickname “the dugout,” was established by American veterans of World War I and World War II. The Hunter-Squires-Jackson (H.S.J.) Post 1218, is a non-profit veterans organization that has been serving the Long Island community for over 75 years.

The history of this organization is rather unique in terms of its beginnings. Due to the imposed racial segregation of the military until after World War II, the founding members of the H.S.J. Post 1218 were primarily African  American and Native American  in background -- a trend that reflected in their membership for years, and set them apart from other American Legions in their region.

The H.S.J. Post 1218, became a welcoming community to veterans all over the country regardless of ethnic or racial background. Over the years, the organization has been a constant in the community by providing programs that allow the community to grow in their understanding of our government, extending the hospitality of always having an open door to organizations that desire a space to provide community service, and ensuring that our veterans and those in need are never without resources. However, this organization's ability to support their community is rapidly declining.

The damages that were exacted by Hurricane Sandy, in addition to the vandalism that followed, have caused substantial deterioration to this building’s foundation. Due to numerous rooftop leaks and other related complications, the H.S.J. Post 1218 has not been able to function as efficiently as it once had, resulting in an adverse impact in their ability to serve the public. With their doors closed because of structural damages, this organization has not been able to provide many of the resources that have supported thousands of people in their community for decades.

"For the last four years, we have essentially been without a building and unable to generate income. Without a facility to host fundraisers and events, nor provide a safe space for community members, we are unable to continue to host the services we wish to provide to the family and friends of those who have served our nation. It is with our deepest sincerity that we hope our story reaches your ears and touches your heart. Any financial support we are able to raise will be used to refortify our building and allow us to continue to be a positive guiding force in serving the community of Amityville and our nation." -- Jacqueline Jackson, H.S.J. Auxiliary Member.

Please help this organization raise the money it needs to further provide support its local community. For more information about the organization and its history please check out http://www.post1218.org/
