I am currently battling a progressive and disabling form of multiple sclerosis (MS), after being diagnosed in 2011, at the age of 39.
MS is a chronic progressive disease of the central nervous system. It causes severe disability as the body’s immune system attacks the brain and spinal cord. As the disease progresses, the nerves are destroyed partially or completely, causing a person to lose functions throughout the body.
I have been accepted to undergo a groundbreaking treatment called Hematopoietic Stem Cell Treatment (HSCT) similar to a bone marrow transplant in Mexico. This procedure harvests a person’s own stem cells from their bone marrow. Chemotherapy is then given to reset the immune system, before transplanting the stem cells back into the body. The new immune system then starts to rebuild itself, hopefully free from MS. This procedure has a high success rate and has been used in other countries for approximately 16 years.
HSCT is currently available on a trial basis, in a few NHS hospitals in England, but unfortunately, so far no Scottish patients have been accepted. My neurologist has exhausted all other treatment options; therefore, this would be my only chance of stopping MS progression, preventing further disability and maintaining a quality of life for me and my family.
This procedure is expensive, costing approximately £40,000; on top of that, I will also have to pay flights and other additional bills during aftercare. If anyone would like to contribute towards this treatment, regardless of the amount, I would be extremely grateful.
