HSA Hurricane Irma Rebuild

Tax deductible
Established in 1957, Halifax Sailing Association (HSA) is one of the oldest and most active sailing clubs in Central Florida and is a not-for-profit, 501 (c) 3 Organization.  The intent of the club is to, "find a better way to attract more boats, more sailors, and to organize better races and other sailing events."  Please visit our website at www.halifaxsailing.org

The club currently sponsors races and sailing activities on a weekly basis to both children and adults.  We have provided affordable sailing lessons for over 50 years. Several years ago, the Halifax Youth Sailing (HYS) affiliated organization was formed to better serve our young sailors.  Today HYS conducts summer sailing camps and a year-round Sailing team.   www.halifaxyouthsailing.org

The spirit of Volunteerism is still present in the HSA Sailing School.  All of the volunteer Instructors are fully certified by the United States Sailing Association, the governing body for the sport of sailing in the U.S.  Each summer HSA offers Adult "Learn To Sail" Sunfish courses and Adult Intermediate Capri courses.  Adult Basic Keelboat courses are held as well.  All activities at the club are conducted solely by volunteers.  Every class that is taught, every repair made and every activity held is completed by a volunteer.  No one at the club is ever paid for their time or assistance.

HSA is the only non-profit sailing school located between Jacksonville and Miami that offers instruction on wet boats, and from small sloops to keelboats.  As a non-profit, the club emphasizes progression and continuing to learn the art of sailing.  Additionally, the club caters to youth sailors throughout the entire year, and is working to rebuild the "big boat" fleet to accommodate senior sailors.  Finally, the club hosts the NROTC for Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

The club's fleet consisted of 9 keel boats, 4 Capri's, 23 Sunfish and 2 motorized safety boats.  Over 65% of the fleet was destroyed by Hurricane Irma.  Our wooden dock was completely torn apart and the concrete floating dock was broken into 3 pieces.  The largest of the keel boats was dragged by the force of the waves through the waterfront area of the club where it demolished several 10 feet long handrails.  The keel boat ended laying on its side directly on the boat ramp, approximately 45 yards from where it was tied-up in its slip.

All donations will be used to replace the destroyed boats and to re-build the other areas of the club that were damaged.  The funds are needed as soon as possible to ensure that the remaining sailing classes may be continued this year and to make certain that all sailing activities will be continued next year and beyond.

Over the past 50+ years, the club has brought sailing to life in the Daytona Beach area.  Countless individuals have learned to sail, have competed in races, have experienced comradery, have found joy in volunteerism, and have just had fun sailing and joining in activities at the club.  Please help us rebuild so we may continue to serve area residents.

Our Goal:  The club would like to continue offering courses to all levels of sailors. Therefore, we will need to purchase a minimum of two 25' keel boats, at a cost of approximately $60,000.  Next, the club is planning to purchase a minimum of four keel boats approximately 22' to 24' long.  In addition to the four boats, the club is will purchase trailers to haul and store the boats on and it is assumed that the total cost of these boats with trailers will cost approximately $80,000.  Finally, the club will be required to purchase at least 10 new Sunfish, with a total cost of approximately $50,000.  Assuming these prices are fairly accurate, that would leave the club approximately $10,000, to have the boats moved to the club and process any paperwork required for ownership.  Unfortunately, that leaves no funds to repair or replace either the floating or wooden dock.  As you can see, your donation is urgently needed.  Please be as generous as possible and know that your donation will help countless individuals in the future.
