Zika Virus Prevention and Awareness

Hi everyone.  My name is Sunny and I am currently in training to be a physician at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio. Dhweeja is a high school student who is interested in public health and community service. We both have always been interested in Global Health and improving public health for all people, irrespective of geography.

This coming May, we will be traveling to Nicaragua to educate the local community about something we've all seen in the news, the Zika virus.

Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere and is compounded by having one of the highest fertility rates in Latin America. Between 35% and 40% of the population lacks access to health services, and 78% of the economically active population has no health insurance. The infant and children mortality rate is significant because of the combination of economic deprivation and lack of quality health care that most of us in the Western world take for granted. In Nicaragua, health promoters are people who are selected by their community’s health committee, which is made up of community leaders who take on the responsibility of improving the health outcomes in their community.

AMOS (Health and Hope) is a Christian non-profit organization that exists to improve the health of impoverished communities by focusing on community health, education and development. AMOS Health promoters receive ongoing education and training and are often the first line of medical aid in the country.

We are designing a trip to Nicaragua to organize training for AMOS Health Promoters in Women’s health and Zika virus prevention.
