In January of this year, my father, Howie, had a serious stroke. His recovery has seen some setbacks. While he is home, he still is in need of constant care and is in desperate need of physical therapy. He is being cared for expertly by his wife, and has regular hospice visits. Unfortunately, his insurance is refusing to cover much needed physical therapy at this most critical time.
Some of the ways PT would make a huge difference in the coming months:
-He presently still has a tracheotomy, swallowing is still not coming so easy, regular work with a trained professional will enhance his chances of eating, drinking, getting that trach removed.
-Speaking, while dad is finally able to say a few words, he still has so much work to do on this front.
-Mobility, while he is able to use both legs, he is not nearly close to getting himself sitting upright, not to mention even to the edge of the bed. With the help of two strong people, he can take a few steps. This is very exhausting, and his wife is not able to take on this task alone. Regular visits from PT would go a long way in helping Dad rebuild the strength in his legs to the point where he should be able to start to take back some mobility independence.
We're sure that PT would be working on more than just these issues, but as we see it, these are the big three. Improvements in any/all of these categories will go such a long way in his physical & emotional recovery. We would like to get him set up as soon as possible, as time is of the essence with all these areas of recovery.
I realize many of you contributed to the first campaign to help Howie and his wife deal with a mountain of medical expenses and loss of work expenses, and for that we are eternally grateful! If you have the ability to pitch in to ease the cost of these physical therapy costs, we'd be over the moon. We still have hope that Howie will make enough of a recovery to have a solid quality of life, and professional PT seems to hold the key to that recovery.
