The man in the picture is named WC. I asked him what that stood for, and he said "I don't know, that's just what she named me".
I've seen him sitting outside the 7-Eleven on the first floor of my building for 2 years now, and recently started talking to him about his living situtation after he mentioned that lots of people used to help him, but that he doesn't get as much help anymore.
He lives in a men's hotel a few blocks from where he panhandles. This is the place: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ewing-Annex-Hotel/105002249543084.
I called them to ask about rates, and he needs to pay $330 for the month to stay there. WC says that lately he can't make enough to cover the room (which is $16 a day if money is not paid up front). He can't work (and doesn't walk well). I'd really like to cover the cost of the room for at least the next 6 months; Chicago winters are rough, and he sleeps outside when he can't get enough money for the day.
With the money from this campaign, I will pay the men's hotel so that he doesn't need to worry about where to sleep for at least a little while. If there's extra, I will give it to him for groceries, clothes, etc.
He never asks for very much, and always says hi to me and all his neighbors every morning and evening when we walk by. He would really appreciate some help.
