A Call for Action to Keep Women’s Shelter Open

Give the Gift of Shelter This Holiday Season

Greensboro, NC – Executive Director of Turning Point 180, Maseta Dorley today expressed her deep gratitude to the members of the community for working to come to the aid of the New Jerusalem Cathedral House of Naomi Women’s Shelter. The shelter currently has 20 beds to house women nightly to help them out of their homelessness. According to Ms. Dorley, “There’s urgency here and a need for greater resources if we hope to reach this goal. With the opening of the winter shelters, New Jerusalem Cathedral House of Naomi Women’s Shelter provides satellite safe haven for single women in partnership with Greensboro Urban Ministry WE Program for the winter months. There is limited capacity in our region for this most vulnerable population. This expansion is providing the ability to help keep women off the streets and put them into a stable shelter setting.”

Community support is vital to our success. The center which has the capacity to house 20 women nightly and 6 families of women and children (but currently has 20 women maximum)– has launched a fundraising campaign to continue operations and keep the doors open. Funds donated by the community will be used for building and program operations such as daily case management where each guest is connected to a social worker to assist them with securing employment, budgeting their finances, connecting to community resources, and much more. As the next federal grant money becomes available, the organization is seeking immediate support to sustain all shelter cost. The goal of the shelter is to lift up every client so that they can stand on their own and achieve the goal of self-sufficiency.

“We are asking our friends in Guilford County to come together to give the Gift of Shelter this Holiday season. We thank those who have worked with us already for to allow these men and women to continue serving some of the most vulnerable citizens.”

Turning Point 180 has served low wealth household and those at imminent risk of homeless in Guilford County since 2012. Today it provides services in the areas of emergency food assistance, case management, GED/Adult Literacy, job and life skills training to over 2000 homeless men, women and children annually. Turning Point 180 does not receive any state or federal funding. It relies solely on the generosity of the community.
