Housing for Shirley Naglingniq, an Inuit woman

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Joan-Ann Gravesande, and I'm fundraising for our sister Shirley Naglingniq who used to be a Labour Relation Officer for the Nunavut Employees Union. (NEU). Please donate generously.

Here is her story:

Shirley Naglingniq is an Inuit Woman who was hired on August 5, 2021, by the Nunavut Employees Union (NEU) in Iqaluit

as a Labour Relations Officer. Shirley is a mother of two and is presently pregnant with her third child.

Shirley was expecting to receive housing as housing is linked to Employment in NEU. In August 2021 Shirley was advised that she would have to live in a one-bedroom house as the newly elected president was going to be moving into the three-bedroom house that she was expecting to move into. Shirley was upset and made a Facebook post about the unfairness of the situation. Shirley took the post down because she recognized that the post may cost friction with the newly elected president and her.

The Facebook post did cause friction between the president and Shirley. Shirley received the correct housing on December 2, with no furniture. She was advised by the president that she would have to wait for furniture as he has spent money on other stuff.

Since August 2021, Shirley has not received formal training for her position. During the period of November and December the President directly supervised Shirley and would give her instructions to carry out tasks that she was not trained on. Shirley was not able to carry out some of the tasks as she did not have the tools to perform the work that was necessary to complete the tasks

On February 9, 2022, Shirley was disciplined for the Facebook post and failing to carry out the orders of the president. The discipline was in the form of five days suspension. A hardship for a new employee.

On February 22, 2022, CULE, the union representing Shirley, was advised that her probation would be extended by three months to accommodate the time off that Shirley had taken to deal with some family issues. In addition, the Employer recommended they would conduct a performance appraisal.

On May 25, 2022, Shirley was advised that her probation would be extended by three months, bringing her to November 2022. Shirley is expected to give birth to her third child in November 2022.

Shirley was advised that she would be given a training plan.

On June 8, 2022, Shirley was terminated with a seven-day notice to vacate her home. The Employer cited the same things that she was disciplined for in February 2022 and stated that they did not feel she would be successful at completing her probation.

The current market cost of housing in Iqaluit is $3725.00 per month. And the waiting list for housing in Iqaluit is 4 years.

Who can afford that?

Solidarity to Shirley Naglingniq.
