Housing Assistance for Disabled Mom

Donativo protegido
In 1997 when I was 8 years old, my mother suffered a life-threatening brain aneurysm and by the grace of God, against all medical statistics, and the fabulous doctors at Zale Lipshy Hospital (now known as UT Southwestern), she survived.   In rare cases, the brain aneurysm ruptures, releasing blood into the skull and causing a stroke, which in mother’s case, resulted in a life-long disability.  She was moved from various hospitals and rehabilitation centers until she regained most of her long-term memories - including her memories of having a daughter.  Although my mom has made a full physical recovery, she continues to experience short-term memory loss which has left her with the inability to work and sometimes even unable to remember daily tasks or the conversation she had only a few hours ago.

Currently my mother lives in Arkansas in government assisted housing on an extremely modest income from Social Security Disability.  I have worked hard at advancing my career so I can maintain a salary that allows me to not only support myself, but also support her financially by paying for groceries, various monthly bills, and medical expenses.  Recently, there have been multiple shootings at her apartment complex in Arkansas leaving her hiding in her bathroom until the Police advise that the area is safe and secure (for the time being anyway).   As a result, I am doing everything in my power to move her to Texas so she can be closer to me (her daughter) and live in a safe environment.  I contacted her apartment complex to determine when her lease was up so I could begin to plan her move only to discover that her lease was up in less than a month leaving me little to no time to develop a plan and secure the government assistance required for her to move.

Without any of her family members able to assist her, moving her to a safe place to live ultimately relies on me, her only child.  As I began my search to find low-income housing or housing assistance of any kind for the state of Texas, I discovered that there are no government subsidized housing options, only housing vouchers.  Currently, the wait list for apply for a housing voucher in Texas is not only closed, but individuals that qualify for housing vouchers can be on the wait list for six months up to several years.  I have contacted loan officers, several government agencies (all of which are no help), as well as employed the use of apartment locating services in an effort to find a housing option that she can afford.  So far any and all options that have been explored are not financially possible on her fixed income, therefore I find myself in a situation where, despite my best efforts, I cannot find affordable housing for my mom.

All that being said, I now find myself here, creating a GoFundMe page so that hopefully I can raise enough money to supplement my mother's income so she can afford an apartment in North Texas.  I estimate that even an additional $200 per month might allow her to afford at least an efficiency apartment in the area.  Those of you that know me are well aware that I'm not one to ask for help unless it is truly needed, but for my mom, I'm willing to do anything I can to ensure she can live in a safe and secure area without having to worry about shots being fired as she walks to check her mailbox.  For those of you that know my mother, you know she is not in this situation by choice and would be eternally grateful for any financial assistance you are able to donate.  Don't be surprised if you get a personal "Thank You" note from her, as she cannot afford nor does she know how to work the Internet, sending letters in the mail is kind of her thing.  :-)

Even if you can't afford to donate, please share this page - Thank you!

*Based on a 2004 study, the combined lost wages of survivors of brain aneurysm rupture and their caretaker for a year were $138,000,000.
