The Dream
Sylvia is 23 years old. She was diagnosed with brain cancer at 11 and over radiated during the treatment process. We’re raising money to purchase a wheelchair accessible van for her. My name is Angela Dobson; I am her mother.
About Sylvia
Her disability aside, she’s a pretty typical 23-year-old, that has hopes and dreams of being a fully functional individual in society. She enjoys typing poems, playing games, and shopping.
Transportation Needs
Every week, Sylvia dreams of being able to go to Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, and eventually Aqua Therapy. There are vacations, socializing parties, aquariums, parks, concerts, and track meets to learn from and enjoy. Up to this point, we’ve been getting by with what we have, but it's time for a more reliable means of transportation. For Sylvia to benefit from these experiences, she needs the support provided by her specialized wheel chair, which is and are her legs.
About the Vehicle
Due to objections voiced by Sylvia’s mother being stranded by the highway is NOT an option! Sylvia in her chair weighs more then 350IBS! There are only a few standard passenger vehicles that can be converted for wheelchair accessibility. Fancier options allow for the vehicle to “kneel”. Some allow for the ramp to be deployed electronically. Luckily, we need all such luxuries. A "used/new" conversion of the Honda Odyssey or Dodge Caravan with an electronic, side-entry ramp will work well for Sylvia.
