Save The Hostel Buffalo-Niagara

Help keep the Hostel in Buffalo! On February 1st, the building housing Hostel-Buffalo Niagara was put up for sale. This would mean the eventual eviction of our beloved organization. We proudly serve as a non-profit guide, hub, and home to over 6,000 domestic and international travellers a year. We believe that the Hostel has been a vital cultural and touristic force in supporting the resurgence of our city. We now need your support to help keep the Hostel in our beloved city!

As of February 1st 2017, the entire building housing the Hostel (from Main St to Washington St) was put up for sale by the Buffalo Urban Renewal Association, mostly due to the back half which has fallen into disrepair. The Hostel's lease will end on July 2021, upon which our organization will be in jeopardy, and at the hands of whoever buys it. We must convince Mayor Brown and the Buffalo Urban Renewal Association what a unique asset Hostel Buffalo-Niagara is is to the city of Buffalo, and for the entire region.

How your support will help
The 10,000 goal of this GoFundMe is a modest estimate of the legal fees and costs related to drawing an architectural plan. We will be presenting this plan to BURA  towards a path to keep our home. We want to work with the city to excute the best way to keep the hostel and serve our community.

Time is of the essence. We do not want to lose our space. By presenting a proposal we will try our hardest to keep on serving the community.

About Us
Hostel Buffalo-Niagara is a treasure and a vital cultural asset to downtown & Western NY. The Hostel needs to continue to be a part of the city's resurgence and cultural history for forever! Save Hostel Buffalo-Niagara!

Why support?
We are proud to be part of Buffalo's renaissance, however we also recognize the many dangers that cities face throughout the country as they are revitalized. Once vibrant cities like San Francisco and Austin, TX are becoming shells of their former selves, as the communities that made them special are pushed away and discarded by a short-sighted gentrification. Nothing makes us happier than seeing our city succeed: We believe that a true renaissance will also protect the people, culture, and flavor of what has made our city special.

About Hostel Buffalo-Niagara
Host to backpackers, travelers and out-of-towners, domestic and abroad, Hostel Buffalo-Niagara is an independent & non-profit hostel in the heart of downtown Buffalo’s Theater District. For over 20 years, we have offered a communal homestead with a fully equipped kitchen with coffee, teas and oatmeal, spacious lounges, free wifi, book exchange, free store, free bicycle sharing, laundry facilities, bag storage and a movie room with the finest hand picked selection of VHS tapes and Ping Pong! We also house Box Gallery, one of Buffalo's hottest art galleries that has hosted artists by the likes of Skylar Borgstrom, Flatsitter, Brian Milbrand, and many more.

Our beds have hosted everyone from Habitat for Humanity volunteers, Finnish folk dancers and musicians here for Finnfest, Troupes of Girl Scouts, families, cyclists, resident artists, musicians, law students here for the Bar Exam, doctors, students, and even Vermin Supreme!

Hostel employees are cultural ambassadors pointing visitors to all of cities cultural offerings, and we directly collaborate with a number of regional and cultural organizations such as the Buffalo Infringement Festival, Food Not Bombs, Waste Not Want Not, Squeaky Wheel Film & Media Art Center, and many more.
