We are an organization that has been dedicated to providing recreational horseback riding to the special needs citizens of our community since 1981, and we need your financial help. The Horses for Handicapped of Pinellas County is a private, non-profit organization that is fully operated by volunteers and 100% reliant on donations from the community for sustainability. We pride ourselves on the fact that we do not charge the participants for their participation. We understand that there is great emotional and financial stress that accompanies the care of a special needs child or adult. On Friday, December 7th, one of our horses developed a severe case of colic that required surgical intervention. Following admittance to the equine veterinary hospital, our horse did not survive the operation that we had hoped would save his life. The surgical bill is $8,380. Hagrid was the largest horse used in this program. With his big size, and even bigger soft brown eyes and heart of gold, he was a big part of our program. The loss of Hagrid is felt by our riders and our volunteers already. While we grieve the loss, we must try to continue our mission in service, and we worry how we will continue without him. Although replacing a horse isn’t possible as he truly left his hoof print on our hearts, we must find a horse to do so. Between the cost of the vet bills and our hope to find a new horse for our program, we are looking at expenses in excess of $12,000. We are hoping that you will donate to help us continue the invaluable service to the community through handicap and autism support, empowerment, training, therapeutic recreational riding and socialization.
