Many of our friends know we are a foster family in Holland, MI. And although some people feel they are not called to foster, there is definitely a way they can help enrich & encourage foster kids at such a vulnerable time.
Hope Pkgs was born to fill a need that many kids have when 1st entering a foster home. A foster family really never knows if children will arrive with anything except the clothes the children have on. Hope Pkgs strives to eliminate the infamous trash bags some kids arrive with and replace them with new bags filled with items such as socks, underwear, pjs, and toiletries.
We have first-hand knowledge of children arriving who have packed their own belongings in trash bags. It is often items they feel are important like toys. Case workers are often unable to assist the kids in the packing process because the situation is so traumatic. It is best to go as quickly as possible.
Our family also knows how wonderful it is to have kids arrive with a bag of their own. A new bag filled with new items such as underwear, socks, pajamas and sometimes even an entire outfit. This bag is something the children can keep. Something they are not sharing with other children in the home. Something new rather than hand-me-downs.
Not only does this benefit the kids but also the foster parents as they can focus on calming the children and getting them settled into a home they have never been to with people they have never met.
The generous donations made to this gofundme account will be put toward purchasing the bags and filling them with those 1st night needs. All money will be used to advance this project. We have approximately 220 children in foster care just within Ottawa County. This will be an ongoing need.
We have witnessed the devastation that puts kids into foster care. We have seen the desperation, sadness, confusion and tangible needs they arrive with. Your support in this project is vital. Our goal of $1200 will help us put together nearly 40 basic bags.
