Hi there! I know what you must be saying, “Kyle, you’re taking in a kid??” If you had asked me before I started teaching, I might be laughing right along with you. But then, I started teaching and everything changed.
The young man you see in the picture with me is Jeffrey. I first met Jeffrey when he was in my 7th grade ESOL (English as a second language) class. My connection with him happened quickly. I started off going to his soccer games in the fall to show my support, and build a relationship. Then, he started wrestling, and I didn’t have the faintest idea how wrestling worked, but I vowed to support him at his matches.
Going into 8th grade, I didn’t have Jeffrey in my ESOL class, but that didn’t stop us from continuing to strengthen the connection that we had formed in 7th grade. Academically, I pushed him harder than he had ever been pushed before. In Virginia, 8th graders must take 5 state tests, but as an ESOL student Jeffrey could get away with taking just 3 of those tests. I had other plans. Much to Jeffrey’s dismay, I was planning on having him take all 5 tests because he was doing so well in his classes. He managed to pass 4 out of his 5 tests, which was amazing! His teachers and I could not have been prouder of his effort and determination as he took those tests.
Athletically, his 8th grade soccer season flew by, and before we knew it we were at the Regional Wrestling Tournament watching Jeffrey wrestle to defend his undefeated season! He stunned all of us with his athleticism and leadership, on and off the mat.
High school has brought new challenges. More responsibility, autonomy, and daily struggles, plus the non-stop questioning “What are you going to do after high school?”. Now being a three-sport athlete in high school, Jeffrey must maintain passing grades in all of his classes to participate on his teams. Jeffrey has risen to the occasion and earned the grades he needs to continue participating in sports. Did I mention he passed his Biology state test?! The boy is unstoppable!
Wait, Kyle, did you say three sports?! Yes, over the summer he added football to his repertoire! Jeffrey’s highlight of his 9th grade sports career has definitely been making it to the Virginia State 3A Wrestling Tournament, a feat not often accomplished by freshmen! He placed 5th place in the state for the 132-lb. weight class!
So why do I want to take guardianship of Jeffrey? Well it’s a complicated answer, but the short and sweet version is that I want to make sure that he has all the opportunities that he deserves in life. There are circumstances in Jeffrey’s life preventing him from having access to certain opportunities, and after talking with him, his mom, and my heart, I cannot think of a better way to help him. I understand that I am asking for a lot of money, but the whole legal process is quite expensive, as some of you may know. Any money donated will go to legal fees. I am not asking for you to give money to help me raise a child, that is something I must take on myself. I would, however, appreciate any help you are able to provide whether that is a donation or sharing this story and campaign!
